Paul Bernetel is a French filmmaker and journalist known for his commitment to African and postcolonial issues. During the 1970s, he played a key role as editor-in-chief of Demain l’Afrique, a magazine focused on political, cultural, and social topics concerning the African continent. The publication was marked by a critical stance towards official French policies in Africa, which led to tensions with contributors such as Maryse Condé, who pointed out contradictions between the magazine’s state funding and its editorial content.

In addition to his journalistic work, Bernetel was also involved in documentary filmmaking, participating in projects that explored African realities from a critical and engaged perspective. His work in both press and cinema reflects a militant approach and a constant concern with power dynamics and representation in the African context.

Though not widely known today, Paul Bernetel remains a significant voice within the French intellectual landscape, one that sought to highlight the struggles and aspirations of the African continent during a period of intense debate around decolonization and international cooperation.
